Tata Steel Recognized for KM    [Date Added : 09/03/2003 ]
The Tata Group annually assesses member companies against the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM), which is adapted from the US Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award framework. The award is designed to encourage Tata companies to measure themselves against a set of criteria which are the hallmarks of a world-class organization.

This year, Tata Steel has won an award for 'Sustained Excellence.' The award is given to Tata companies for obtaining a 600 plus score out of 1000 points for three consecutive years. To date, Tata Steel is the only member company to win this award.

As part of the assessment exercise, the participating companies are assessed by trained assessors in seven dimensions - leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resource focus, process management and business results.

This year, Tata Steel scored 675 points, indicating that the company has reached the position of being the industry leader. A senior Baldrige assessor from the United States, Bob Osterhoff, conducted the assessment of Tata Steel with other trained assessors from the Tata Group.

Some of the strengths observed were the quality of senior leadership and its commitment to excellence, community involvement activities, production processes driven by process automation, deployment of the Balanced Score Card and an understanding and deployment of knowledge management.
