2009 Asian MAKE Winners

The 2009 Asian MAKE Winners are (in alphabetical order):

Honda Motor (Japan)

Honda Motor’s driving force is a never-ending quest to fulfill customers’ ‘dreams.’ Honda, with annual sales of US $120.3 billion (fiscal year ending March 31, 2009) and over 180,000 employees, states that each and every available ‘particle’ of knowledge must be applied to realize these ‘dreams.’ The company is Japan’s second-largest automotive manufacturer and the world’s largest motorcycle producer. Honda Motor obtains about 85% of its sales from outside of Japan.

The 2009 Asian MAKE panel has recognized Honda Motor for its knowledge-driven enterprise culture, and enterprise knowledge sharing and collaboration (1st place). Honda Motor is a six-time Asian MAKE Winner.

Mr. Shigeomi Kubota, Division Director, Corporate Planning Division, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., stated: “It’s a great honor for Honda to be selected as one of the Asian MAKE award winners. Under the current tough economy, a company’s strength plays a more important role than in a stable business situation. The strength comes from the value of that company, which can be created only by people sharing knowledge. That’s why we would like to keep working together with people in Asia and worldwide sharing knowledge and experiences. By doing so, we hope we eventually get to our goal of sharing ‘joys’ with all the people in line with our company’s principle of ‘The Three Joys’.”

Hong Kong Police Force (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China)

Hong Kong is a metropolitan city that is 1,104 square kilometres in size with a population exceeding 7 million people. The Hong Kong Police Force, officially established in 1844, is responsible for ensuring a safe and stable society by upholding the rule of law, maintaining law and order, preventing and detecting crime, and safeguarding and protecting life and property.

The vision of the Hong Kong Police Force is to maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest and most stable societies in the world. The Force has 27,840 disciplined officers and 4,775 civilians. The police-population ratio is 394 officers to 100,000 citizens. The overall crime rate is low and compares favorably with other metropolitan cities. In the United Nations International Crime Victim Survey conducted between February and June 2006 for Hong Kong, 92.7% of the respondents felt it safe to walk alone in the street in the dark and 93.9% felt the police had done a good job. This compared favorably with the survey average of 75 and 65%, respectively, in other jurisdictions.

The 2009 Asian MAKE panel has recognized the Hong Kong Police Force for developing knowledge workers through senior management leadership. This is the first time that the Hong Kong Police Force has been recognized as an Asian MAKE Winner.

Mr. Tang King-shing, Commissioner of Police, said, “In order to aspire to our collective vision of keeping Hong Kong safe and stable, we believe in maximizing the full potential of our officers through training and development. Knowledge management is one of the principal tools which we have been using for a number of years.

People are our greatest asset and developing our intellectual capital involves a two-prong approach: providing formal training and development; and facilitating a continuous learning culture amongst our officers.

A continuous learning culture is what helps an organization to move with the times. In the policing context, continuous learning helps officers to stay on top of ever-evolving changes, and the organization to stay on top of the ever-challenging environment. We strongly believe in the value of knowledge management in helping the organization to grow.”

As knowledge created by Innovation Activities is registered in the KMS, employees can share and make use of the knowledge in their jobs.

K-water has also made an effort to expand knowledge sharing outside the organization. By building an open knowledge network called ‘Waterpedia’ (www.waterpedia.net), K-water supports systematic knowledge sharing and collaboration with external experts and customers.”

While the value and investment in knowledge is often more readily accepted in the private sector, we believe that recognition and investment in public sector entities as learning organizations is just as fundamental, to ensure that we deliver to our shareholders -- the general public.

During our journey we have worked with a range of organizations in the public, private and not- for-profit sectors. We have partnered with researchers from a variety of universities in Australia and overseas and built upon our networks with other government agencies, both within New South Wales and across Australia. We have benefited from their advice, input and guidance and we will continue to learn from other organizations that have been nominated as part of the Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise Awards 2009.

As we near the end of the first decade of the 21st century, it remains a challenge for leaders in all sectors to distinguish and leverage our most valuable enterprise resource -- our intellectual capital.”
